“Pussy Riot” women still jailed in Russia

Amnesty Blog page for the latest report on the extended jail sentence for the “Pussy Riot” group in Russia.
I almost typed Soviet Union then, and reading about this case takes anyone who remembers them back to the dark days of the repression of dissidents under various Soviet dictatorships.
There is no way that this group of women should ever have been in prison. That their stay has been extended only shows how undemocratic Putin’s Russia has become.
Rock musician Sting has also joined criticism of the ruling, as he is due to perform in Russia.
See the AIUK page for a report and an action to take.

I heard about this on Woman’s Hour and they did an interview with a reporter about it. It is shameful that the Russian government is doing this , though not surprising.

  2. Thanks Jennifer. These are brave women standing up to Putin. However, any disagreement with the leaders/dictators seems to be punished in Russia, and there’s an unholy alliance with some members of the Russian Orthodox Church too. We can only keep supporting Amnesty’s highlighting of the case and appeals for the women’s freedom.

  3. The story got a mention on Broadcasting House on Radio 4 this morning too. The presenter weakly pointed out that Putin has been elected – though how free and fair Russia’s really elections are is not too clear. And even a majority backing of the electorate is not a mandate to abuse human rights.

  4. Don’t think Putin knows what shame means.

  5. Hi Jon & All,
Sorry to say, I can’t agree with your heading about the Pussy Riot group. How on earth can it be a Closing statement ? The matter isn’t closed and the three have not been freed, to enjoy life outside imprisonment. I consider that to use the term, Closing statement was very unfortunate indeed, and may give the impression that Amnesty are washing their hands of the fate of ladies who may suffer at the hands of a callous Russian government.

  6. Hi Bert, heading amended to clarify. They were the closing statements by the women at their trial.
    Best wishes,
    Jon.
