In Sialkot, Pakistan, on 15 August last year two brothers – Mughees & Muneeb – were beaten to death and lynched by a mob whilst police officers and other on-lookers did nothing. Somebody caught the outrage on video – the two lads can be seen protesting their innocence as they are beaten with sticks and wires by a group of men before being strung up on metal poles. They were were alive as they were hung from the poles.
This was brought to the group’s attention by a relative of the boys who aims to urge the law enforcement agencies of Pakistan to conduct a full and thorough investigation in to this matter and bring the perpetrators of this atrocity to justice.
Amnesty’s Pakistan Campaigner has met the relatives of the two boys and has raised the case several times with Amnesty’s Programme Director, who felt that Amnesty should await the results of government’s response to the incident. The government initiated an inquiry and local police officials (those who were present during the lynching) have been suspended pending the inquiry. The case is now being heard in an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan (the ATCs deliver speedier justice than normal courts in which hearings can take years).
In a nutshell, Amnesty is now monitoring the case and hope to ensure that fair and transparent justice is guaranteed.
AmnestyBrum will also be watching.
More about the campaign for justice here:

I started this but don’t know what to say, it’s so awful.
Jon.
I know. But, remember, it’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness…
Dear Bill & Others,
Two of my letters do not seem to have been included on ‘Recent Comments’. Have they been recieved, by
the Group, or gone astray? If the latter, I could try
sending them again.
Bert.
Hi Bert,
There’s nothing in the AmnestyBrum email account, so I’m guessing that you meant to post something here? If so, just go ahead and leave a reply here.
Best, Bill
Thanx, Bill – now for re-starting.
The appalling story of the two brothers – Mughees and Muneeb – who were beaten to death by a lynch-mob. is
almost unbelievable. Police officers, and other on-lookers did
nothing, apart from the thugs who committed the outrage. Does law-and-order exist, in Pakistan, or only the law of the
jungle, which rules, relentlessly? If ever there was a case for
Amnesty International, this is it. It might be helpful to have
response(s) from the Pakistan government, but within a
certain time limit. But not even a “fair and transparent justice”
will bring the two brathers back to life.
It is not clear what the two murdered brothers were accused
of, by those twisted maniacs who tortured them to death. Had
they expressed “wrong” views, about politics or religion? Did
they belong to some despised minority? What could possibly
have motivated the sick-minded killers? Nothing the brothers
had said, nor done, could ever have justified the inhuman
punishment inflicted upon them.
Bert.
Absolutely agree, Bert, and thanks for taking the time to write about this. Mughees and Muneeb were not accused of anything – it seems there was some kind of fracas at a cricket match, and it escalated into this appalling brutality and the extinction of the two boys’ lives. Nobody has the right to take the life of another human being. The best the family of the boys can hope for now is justice – and we will do our best to watch and ensure that this is indeed the case.
Some kind of fracas at a cricket match? That may be, Bill,
although questions remain that some people know the
answers to. A fracas at a cricket match makes it seem as
if there were differences over some petty issues. In
English culture, ‘cricket’ has associations with “that which
is fair and sporting”, perhaps on a nice sunny day.
Bert.
